Made in Taiwan

Another nail has been driven into the coffin of the Celtic New Zealand thesis but, as Matthew 'Mysterio' Dentith sadly notes, the Franklin E Local doesn't seem to care about facts.

Posting here because there's no email that I can discern: there is in Pataka an exhibition you ought to have seen. Maybe you have. If you haven't, too bad because it closes today... and I doubt it will tour. Anyhow, it's called North Road and surrounds a map of the old Porirua Road from Johnsonville to Paekakariki drawn in 1849 by Thomas Fitzgerald.

There's no individual permalink, just this page

http://www.pataka.org.nz/48977/links/bulletpages.html

which presumably will be updated with the new exhibitions quite soon. Highly worth it anyhow, the display of the map alone was a beaut. They had a wee $10 catalogue which you could chase up if you're interested.

(Readers from the Wellington region have all of February to go see the Ay! Iran photographic exhibit, also highly worth it.)

President-elect Barack Obama has yet to attend church services since winning the White House earlier this month, a departure from the example of his two immediate predecessors.

On the three Sundays since his election, Obama has instead used his free time to get in workouts at a Chicago gym.

Asked about the president-elect’s decision to not attend church, a transition aide noted that the Obamas valued their faith experience in Chicago but were concerned about the impact their large retinue may have on other parishioners.

“Because they have a great deal of respect for places of worship, they do not want to draw unwelcome or inappropriate attention to a church not used to the attention their attendance would draw,” said the aide.

Both President-elect George W. Bush and President-elect Bill Clinton managed to attend church in the weeks after they were elected.

Anonymous,
You appear to be the same person who spammed the previous article's comments with copy and paste from the NZ Conservative website. Perhaps you should direct your energies elsewhere? I don't think this article (or the last one) are the right places for the type of dialogue you seem to be hoping to stimulate.

If I believed that nonsense about evolution, I’d through my Bible away and worship myself.

You choose to believe in unknown force that has never been observed, quantified or tested. It is a construct to get the Big Bang theory to work out.

I choose to believe in Jesus, God in the flesh, creator of all things, who lived, was crucified, dead and buried, an rose on the 3rd day to prove His claims, He is attested to in the words of the New Testament.

Who has more faith?

Ananymous,
"You choose to believe in unknown force that has never been observed, quantified or tested. It is a construct to get the Big Bang theory to work out."

Its funny you should say that because its actually quite the contrary. Evolution can and has been observed, quantified and tested. That is the scientific method for you. You can see it in the fossil record, you can see it in biology. And personally I have no real opinion on the Big Bang Theory. Evolution wasn't "invented" to support the Big Bang Theory, it was a precursor (i.e. evolution was theorised before the B.B. Theory...again, try reading a book sometime).

"Who has more faith?"

Hahahaha!!! My you really just have no idea what evolution actually is do you? Why not at least try reading my posts in the previous article, although again a book (one of those things with paper pages in it other than the Bible) would be better. To answer your question you have more faith than me. Alot more faith. This is because my worldview isn't based upon faith, it is based upon the weight of evidence and upon ethics and reason. That is the point: science isn't about 'faith', it is about testing and evidence. Knowledge. Not faith. If you can't grasp the difference then I don't know what to say.

Besides, as previously stated your posts have nothing to do with this thread. I have not attacked your religion, and I have no problem with people who choose to follow a given religion. What I have done is defended evolution and the scientific method against your completely ignorant view of how scientific theories work. I have also stated that I have a problem with fundamentalists due to the death of reasoning it seems to promote. Your posts have revealed that you fit into this latter category.

Maps,
I've read through the latest elocal article of which Matthew posted links and was wondering what kind of processes you might know of in which to get the magazine to be held liable / submit a complaint to an authority for the gross errors it has been submitting to the public? I would have hoped the first round of criticisms the previous article has received on the scoop review would have made the author at least a little more reasoned in his approach. Unfortunately this wasn't the case and we are faced with yet more public dissemination and replication of skewered views about NZ's prehistory. This sort of pseudo-science serves as a constant barrier to public understanding in my profession and serves as a constant annoyance. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by both yours and Matthew's blogs on this subject. Keep up the good work.

Hi Edward,

I'd had similar thoughts. Do you want to meet for a coffee and talk about it? My email is shamresearch@yahoo.co.nz
