New Zealand, old Lemuria

I've been writing a review of Jack Ross' book Fallen Empire  for the forthcoming 46th issue of the Kiwi literary journal brief. Fallen Empire was produced to accompany a recent exhibition by sculptor and draughtsman Karl Chitham, who is the creator of the Museum of True History, a sort of pretend-institution which has for several years now been offering up pieces of pretend-history to bemused gallery audiences.
Jack's book collects fragments of three plays that initiates of a mystical sect called the Society of Inner Light supposedly performed in a private theater above a rundown storehouse in the small North Island town of Raetihi last century. In his introduction to Fallen Empire Ross sketches the ideology and history of the imaginary Society:
There's a lot about Atlantis and Lemuria in their surviving writings. They held some very revisionist ideas about the accepted chronology of world history...Polynesian culture was, to them, primary and almost inconceivably ancient. The emissaries of civilisation (for them) emanated originally from the Pacific - specifically from the lost continent of Mu, which now survives only in the form of scattered islands of the Oceanic archipelago...The main body of members came to New Zealand after WWI...The last one standing turned out the lights, leaving everything in situ, sometime around 1973...
The lost continent of Lemuria, or Mu for short, was a popular fantasy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Madame Blavatsky, the con artist creator of the hyper-syncretic creed known as Theosophy, claimed that Lemuria had been the home of a technologically and spiritually backward, dark-skinned people who had managed to emigrate to Africa and Australia before the waters rose and drowned their villages. Rudolf Steiner, the  hallucinationist who set up a breakaway from Blavatsky's movement called Anthroposophy in Weimar Germany, claimed to have made astral journeys through space and time to Lemuria. In fin de siecle Australia a slew of fantastic novels imagined pale-skinned refugees from a drowned, technologically advanced Lemurian civilisation surviving deep in the Outback, despite the fierce climate and attacks by bands of Aboriginals.

Creeds like Theosophy and Anthroposophy may be in decline, but the myth of a sunken continent in the southern hemisphere is not going away. In recent years the cult known as the Universal Peace Nation of Waitaha, whose scams have been discussed on this blog before, has taken to offering tours of sites in New Zealand associated with 'ancient Lemuria'.
The Waitahans claim to be the descendants of extraterrestrials who arrived on earth from the star system of Sirius tens of thousands of years ago and built a technologically advanced civilisation in Egypt, South America and the Pacific. The Waitahan insistence that New Zealand is a surviving fragment of Lemuria would have seemed to strange to nineteenth and early twentieth century mystics, who tended to locate the continent beneath the waves of either the tropical Pacific or the tropical Indian oceans.
Here is the Waitaha cult's advertisement for its 2012 tour of Lemuria, aka New Zealand:
We will have the honor of spending time with the Waitaha elders. We will visit some of their most sacred places. We will be invited to stay in their Marae, where they greet their family members and dream with them. We will learn about their ancient traditions and witness through our hearts their deep connection on the physical plane to our Lemurian ancestors...A dedicated group will be formed to join this special journey energetically or physically. Your heart will know how deep is the calling in your awakening DNA layers to join. The codes of MU are ready to reveal themselves to us. It is indeed the time to reconnect fully to the wisdom of the most ancient civilization with our reawakened collective conscious Heart.
For the credulous foreigners who take the cult's tours, Lemuria is evidently a heady place. Here is an excerpt from one tourist's record of his peculiar pilgrimage through this country:
We are to attempt something which hasn’t been done since 1735, namely to revive an ancient pact with dolphins whereby they drive an ample amount of fish into the bay to feed the people, who agree not to disturb them in return. A ritualist has prepared the scene for our arrival. We direct our gaze into the centre of the bay and send forth the vibrations of our sacred sounds. This also restores an ancient mode of communing and stimulates us to remember the inner depths from which we call. We maintain our chant for roughly twenty minutes. Next day, word has it that the fishermen report a record catch.
That night we engage in further ceremony under the elders’ direction. This involves us men honouring the women of our group by painting their face and hands in a ritual setting of heightened consciousness and expectation. This empowers them to embody and us to serve the Sacred Feminine. The accord seals our collective adoption into the ranks of Waitaha.
A number of New Agers with no obvious connections to the Universal Peace Nation of Waitaha have also used the internet to proclaim New Zealand a surviving fragment of the ancient continent of Lemuria.  There is a certain irony to the tendency of twenty-first century mystics to associate New Zealand with humanity's antiquity. Except for Antarctica and a few Arctic islands like Svalbard, New Zealand was the last sizeable piece of dry land to be settled by humans. It is unlikely that people lived here in significant numbers even a thousand years ago.
The newness of New Zealand has fascinated and troubled generations of Pakeha Kiwis. In the middle decades of the twentieth century, poets like Charles Brasch and Allen Curnow were disturbed by the 'empty hills' and 'silent plains' they perceived in their underpopulated homeland, and sometimes longed for the deep history and big cities which are taken for granted by Europeans.
But not all Pakeha were so melancholy. As James Belich and other historians have shown, the notion that New Zealand was a sort of divine gift to the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic races - a 'better Britain' or 'God's Own Country' in the South Seas - was widely and intensely held by early Pakeha settlers.
For the new wave of believers in the Lemuria myth, though, New Zealand is a sacred country because of its supposed antiquity.
I suspect that the willingness of the latest generation of mystics to associate New Zealand with an ancient civilisation has something to do with both the rebranding of this country in recent decades and the mood of Romantic anti-modernism which has been a feature of Western popular culture during the same period.
At the same time that tens of millions of Westerners have become disillusioned with industrial society and the modern idea of progress, and begun to vote for Green Parties, buy organic veges, and idealise rustic societies like Tibet, movies like Lord of the Rings and advertising campaigns by our Tourism Board have seen New Zealand branded as some sort of antediluvian paradise, full of cheery hobbits, goblin forests, and pure cascading streams. It is surprisingly easy, in this sort of atmosphere, for romantic foreigners to imagine New Zealand as an ancient rather than a very new society - as a surviving fragment of Lemuria, rather than a better Britain. If ancient human societies were paradisal, and if New Zealand is a verdant, pre-industrial paradise, then musn't New Zealand be some remnant of the distant past?

sounds like the waitaha dickheads have been making an alliance with the neo-nazi ancient celtic nzers...

'That afternoon, we hike to the river for another ceremony, stopping at a cemetery to honour golden-haired (Scandanavian) ancestors who visited long ago, contributing their DNA to Waitaha genetics. Te Porohau then draws our attention to the pyramid mountain opposite, saying that Egyptian ancestors travelled there in the past. The group resumes its journey to the river. I kneel a while communing with my pyramid ancestors before following. Strong energy builds in me as we walk the remaining 2-3 kilometres. Soon I have caught up with Drunvalo and Te Porohau at the head of our procession. As the river draws near, I can’t help but outpace them. The road is overlooked by stones on both sides for a stretch. I feel them vibrating strongly as I pass, as if amplifying the build-up I continue to experience in myself.'

What's Jack's game Scott? Is he pretending to be pretending or really pretending? Jack is a devious man I saw him down south with some strange beings engaged in God knows what rites and rituals...

Jack is a big LOTR's fan.

I think by the way that the movies were great but it is a worry that there are those who kind of associate it with what NZ is.

Do you think that this trend of Jack's to 'go south in winter' is a sign that as we expected all is not well?

Perhaps we are all doomed?

"We're doomed Mr Mainwering! Doomed!"

Dear Scott,

Shocked to hear that your scepticism has extended to casting doubt upon the bona fides of the Museum of True History. While it's true that Karl Chitham has done some curatorial work for this organisation, any suggestion that it is in any way "a sort of pretend-institution which has for several years now been offering up pieces of pretend-history to bemused gallery audiences" is quite inaccurate.

And as for you, Richard, surely "pretending to be pretending" would cancel itself out into a simple statement of the simple truth?

Hi Jack,

I thought the point of the museum was Borges-style pretend-history, like my old Roger Rountree faux-biography? Or is there another layer of mystery I'm missing?

Here's a revealing quote from the above-mentioned New Agers' account of a Waitaha-led pilgrimage. It suggests that some Maori don't exactly appreciate a bunch of Pakeha 'Waitahans' running around Waipoua forest pretending to reveal ancient secrets to duped tourists:

'On the way, we stop to visit Tanae Mihi, a giant Kauri tree which is sacred to the people. Over 100 of us cram into a small clearing. Following intense meditation and exquisite singing, a difficult moment arises. I gather from within my altered state that one of the Waitaha men – known to me from the Auckland greeting ceremony – perceives an element of disrespect in the conduct of a non-Waitaha Maori. I have little understanding of this distinction and, like everyone in our group, hold my peace to facilitate harmonious resolution of what must now be acknowledged. It feels as if an ancient tension has been activated but is well contained by our large number.

Drunvalo speaks eloquently of a need to let go of old wounds if we are to fulfil our purpose. Tension abates but the incident adds an edge to the question ‘What is Waitaha?’ Two principal stories contend: 1) the Waitaha were original inhabitants of Aeoteorea who were later overwhelmed by a warlike people now known as Maori but transmitted their way of peace through female lines for generations, and 2) Waitaha evokes an ancient cultural heritage, hidden from white colonisation but carried on in secrecy by many of the native tribes known collectively as Maori. Everyone I ask has a different angle but the group that is directly sponsoring our visit seems to favour 1) while most others seem to favour 2). I have no grounds or need to judge.'

Associate Education Minister John Banks says he believes the Genesis account of the start of life on Earth. According to the Bible, God made the world in six days, with Adam and Eve being his last act of creation. John Banks told Radio Rhema that he has no doubts the first chapters of Genesis are true.

"That's what I believe, but I'm not going to impose my beliefs on other people, especially in this post-Christian society that we live in, especially in these lamentable times.'' "There are reactionaries out there, humanists in particular, that overrun the bureaucracies in Wellington and state education.''

Mr Banks says he's too old, these days, to be 'judgemental'.

Bible scholars are divided over whether this is a literal description or an allegory to help people understand how the world came into being.

Actually the Sirians settled Mars through Waitaha permission. He has also been identified as Set or Seth. The reason the Sirians settled Mars was because it was at that time in the cradle orbit of life. Taking 720 days to get around the sun would have resulted in the most preferable weather that was conducive to civilization at that particular time period.

Sirians are spiritual warriors, and strong connected to life-forms of dolphins and whales. Lot of people feel familar with these life-forms, because they lived in those forms as well, and perceive those entities as loving friends.

Open YOUR self up to the inner/outer light!

As I said to Scott, Jack is a Yeatsian through and through - but also a Poe man and a polymath – Jack himself is an enigma wrapt in an an enigma, a walking a spillally labyrinth or a Borgesian or Robbe-Grillet mis en abyme; a West that never meets East, an East gone West, and a West gone East and the author of many deep and enigmatic works )(of varying interest and quality but some great [or pretty bloody good] ones) such as Nights with Giordorno Bruno and EMO which should be read more.

Email (slightly edited) to Scott's review and view re Jack's dangerous new book:

'Jack is a Yeatsian through and through (and [closet?] Golden Dawner (and more?) as per Yeats etc?) - if it is satire, like Gulliver's Travels (perhaps my favourite book, or another The Golden Ass (Jack and I both like that or even The Sartyricon etc etc, or many other important modernist and premodernist works): it is Menippean satire I would guess, and Jack "is half in love" with his mythologies and abstractions. A way of being and not being a Golden Dawner?

You are not hugely enthusiastic about Jack's work!

I think his more recent book Alt is very good and Emo...but our Jack is The Artful Dodger writ large!

It (his latest Wildean book of The Golden Dawn) is not an oblique attack on the over positivist enthusiasm of the "Alternative History Denouncer and Rather too Politically Correct Society" run by, run by...a certain ( one second name starts with an E and a person, hmm...a well known Blogger and one time iconoclast?..no, cant recall the name) [I hesitate to say BS artist!]....hmmm...Professor Jack is a quiet one for sure.

There are many different groups of physical and non physical Extraterrestrial Groups assisting planet earth and the starseeds at this time. They represent other Galaxies, other dimensions as well as other aspects of time. Very often there are groups of different beings working together to help us such as with the Intergalactic Councils and with Ashtar Command. The main groups that assist planet earth and the starseeds here are the Sirians, the Pleiadians, Ashtar Command and the Arcturians. All of these groups have deep connections with planet earth and this is why they regularly step forward to assist us.

I experience their energies as being very divine and high vibrational. It reminds me of the vibration of Angels. I suspect that at their level of evolution that they act in angelic ways. Indeed I believe that we need to have an open mind about the nature of evolved beings. It is normal for humans to want to categorise other beings in strict ways. However I think that it is possible that we will learn that there is more to the process of spiritual evolution of races and that maybe we evolve into angels and other types of beings.

I just had a look at the Sirius Ascension website and the first thing that struck me was, how come these extraterrestrial star beings who are so keen to communicate with earthlings never ever subsidise the expensive books, DVDs and courses that one has to purchase in order to communicate with them? 300 pounds for a Star Seed home study correspondence courses on how to meditate sounds a bit expensive to me.

We are your closest companions and thus can vibrate at a frequency that is commonly shared between us. Though locked in your cellular memory banks for eons of time, nevertheless no truer before than today; we share a longstanding bond of birth and frequency matching ability. We are literally weaved into the very thread of your being.

We are coming in light ships that look like diamonds. This alone will dazzle you and hold you inspeculative captivity long enough for you to lose control of your rational linear thinking. It is at this moment that you will begin to feel with your mind the immense power of the dazzling diamond ship; it's ability to transmit loving light unto each of you. In this, you receive the rapture that the brethren Jesus and so many others speak of and represent, today and yesterday. And this will usher in the final end of domination on your planet. We are coming with glad tidingsand powerful undeniable comforting energy for each of you. Don't you welcome this in your current turbulent times of falling systems?

After all the academic comments above, I'm here just to say: Lemuria and Mu aren't the same concepts. Lemuria was the Indian Ocean fancy, Mu was the Pacific Ocean one. Hate to mention Wikipedia, but it does help untangle them.

10:30 pm

from wiki

Mu is the name of a hypothetical continent that allegedly existed in one of Earth's oceans, but disappeared at the dawn of human history.

The concept and the name were proposed by 19th century traveler and writer Augustus Le Plongeon, who claimed that several ancient civilizations, such as those of Egypt and Mesoamerica, were created by refugees from Mu—which he located in the Atlantic Ocean.[1] This concept was popularized and expanded by James Churchward, who asserted that Mu was once located in the Pacific.[2]

Just a small point - Waitaha and all that represents, is bandied around and these new age scum are part of that. The name for some of us is a connection to Tūpuna, to whakapapa, to the past. Waitaha is not a punchline for a joke.

its called 'imprinting' when they put things in movies. they like to 'hide' things in plain sight, it is a typical serpent tactic. so u think its too obvious, or so people can say get a grip you been watching too much V, as i get all the time... i watched the movie years ago, never even seen the tv series..!

The complete "Lacerta" interview
transformed into audio format by http://www.alternativerealities.org/

This is an audio transformed version of a transcript that was circulated and passed around in the early 2000s.
it is also known as the lacerta interview.
while there are some websites naming a Jimmy Bergman from Sweden as the source. researching this shows that Jimmy Bergman is just a fictional person. And the only explanation is that certain websites made that name up so that
it would appear like they had been granted the copyright, this is not the case there is no Jimmy Bergman to be found that claim to be the author or original receiver of this transcript that appeared about 10 years ago
in the end this name seem to have been constructed in a lame copyright scam attempt. which is hilarious since the transcript says it should be spread far and wide via e-mail etc..
and are even asking people to do this. this transcript was spread that way from the beginning, and also via various file sharing networks such as dc++ in pdf format

if you want the text version just google "the lacerta interview" and you will find the text at various websites

Great piece. Some people quite close to me swallowed the Rudolf Steiner's rubish ideas and even think of sending their kids to Waldorf schools. This pseoudo-science needs to be ridiculed. Thanks a lot for taking time to write about this. Also, happy with your critic on LOTR tourism.

4:24 am
Blogger Richard said...

Yes, I agree, but I understand the impulse towards mystery etc

My son came here in 2006 and we watched the LOTR films and for me they constituted some of the best moves I have ever seen. (And I only liked Heavenly Creatures before, the other movies by Jackson I thought were just bad..) I then decided to read the Hobbit (my ex wife, who read books very rapidly so she found LOTRs easy to get through) and all my children have read that) and indeed I found that to be a a very good book. Well worth a squiz into.

BUT that doesn't mean I avoid realism - if I read the harder -edged Robbe-Grillet or another writer such as Nathanael West or Steinbeck it doesn't mean I cant read Sherlock Holmes or indeed a novel by Samoan writer Albert Wendt...and it doesn't mean I conflate the LOTRs with NZ as "it is" (it is not)... (I have read the book although my son ploughed through it and I believe Jack is big fan of it)...like Scott I appreciate Updike as well as Pynchon or like Jack I can read Kathy Acker as well as say Maurice Gee or Keri Hulme or Chris Else (I just read his "Gith" - great book) ... but I don't conflate the LOTRs with NZ as people are doing.

For me this Mu stuff is just that, a lot of moo! But someone such as Yeats was into much great nonsense and mystification than that, and Jack worships Yeats so, well he and his wife make pilgrimages to worship Mu and various variations of ideas from Giodorno Bruno, Hermes Trismegistus, Thoth, Poimandres* ancient Sanscrit (?) mysteries, and so on...

Escapism as its place but it is question of balance.

Steiner is problematic - the schools are not so bad, actually I have known people who went to and even taught at such schools, and I went once to the Ellerslie one and read poetry, and it was a good school - but the much of that philosophy and even some of that of Jung is problematic. And yet there are many useful ideas associated with both of those thinkers, as there are with say Heidegger and even - dare I say the P -word P-P-Pound! (Not that any of poor old Pound's politics makes much sense)...

*Some of his other interests include, as well as Ovid, The Arabian Knights and Derrida: Hermetica, Corpus Hermeticum, Kybalion,Three Parts of the Wisdom of the Whole Universe
Alchemy, Astrology,Theurgy
Influence and Influences,Hermetic Movements, Rosicrucianism
Orders, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor, the Hermetic Brotherhood of Light, Ordo Templi Orientis...and much else of this kind...
such as The Kabbala, the Qabalah Occult and divinatory tarot (Sesostris comes to TS Eliot as Sosotris via Huxley's 'Crome Yellow' BTW), Hermetists and Hermeticists,John Dee, Aleister Crowley, Israel Regardie, Thābit ibn Qurra , Paracelsus...etc etc

Correction: That should be "I haven't read the book"...

But, it is, or might be thought to be, of considerable concern when one of our leading literary and local community "VIPS" let's himself get involved in these devious areas of the Golden Dawn etc etc etc etc etc esp. considering Dr. Scott's struggle for political correctness, truth and justice in this troubled and tormented age.
